Child Urns: Infant Urns and Youth Urns
How to Select an Urn for a Child
Child Urns: Losing a child is not easy. In fact, it is the single most difficult period of time a parent will ever face. And, while memorializing a deceased child does not ease the pain associated with his or her loss, it does offer a form of closure for the parents, family and friends.
When selecting infant urns/child urns there are a few key components to consider. The most important consideration is the size of the urn. It is not uncommon for families to contact us with concerns regarding the size of a cremation urn that is appropriate for their child- especially if the child was not an infant. The general rule of thumb is to allow one cubic inch of space for each pound the child weighed prior to his or her passing. It is also a good idea to study the temporary child or infant urn and determine if you would like to purchase an urn that is the same, smaller, or larger size than what is currently being used.
The second most important factor to think about is the symbolism and/or personality that you wish to capture with the child's urn. Child and Infants urns often include cherubs- a common religious symbol of youth and innocence that is not lost in death, or items commonly associated with children such as teddy bears, booties, and blocks. While some of our child and infant urns come in the actual shape of the representations mentioned above, many of our urns take a more simplistic approach by boasting a simple design on the side of the urn.
The third issue to consider is how you anticipate safeguarding the urn. Do you anticipate keeping the memorial on display at home? Or do you intend to inter the ashes and urn by way of land or sea?
If you intend to inter the urn and ashes by way of land, it is important to determine if you would like for both to remain intact. Although our youth and infant cremation urns are made of incredibly durable materials such as wood, bronze, ceramic, metal, and cultured marble, these materials will weather and deteriorate in the damp underground. While it is not uncommon for urns to be buried without the protection of a vault, it is recommended that you consider purchasing and using an urn vault if preservation is important to you.
However, if it is the total "ashes to ashes" concept that you desire, you might consider our biodegradable urn. Our Aqua Journey Child's Urn, made of recycled and earth-friendly materials, is biodegradable and appropriate for those who desire a more "green" option. Not only is this child/infant urn a suitable option for land burial, but it is also appropriate for interment by sea as well.
